This weeks installment of Creative Maker I’d like to introduce you to Heather who is one of my best friends and one half of Crafted kisses and all round super Mum. Now her crafty business has been going on for a few years now, but this year Heather is wanting to really make a go and give her all to a passion she loves!
Hello Heather, can we start of with you telling us a little bit about yourself?
Ooh a bit about me?! First and foremost! I’m a mum, to two gorgeous kids. And a young mum at that, although most days I don’t feel it, I had Lilli when I was 19 (half way through my art foundation) so I left college and pressed pause on any career plans I had and then Max came along at 25. I’m also the proud owner of a super lovely husband, Brad! He’s great! Career wise, I’ve been a photographer for a fashion brand (which I luckily fell into) and then Flannels.com and now I’m working for a lovely little baby boutique while I free up some time for Crafted Kisses.
I know you’re in the early stages but what made you start Crafted kisses?
Oh it’s something I’ve always deep down wanted, who doesn’t love being creative! But just never really found the time. I’ve always done the odd craft for friends and family but with the encouragement from a few I’ve decided to really press on and work on some lasting ideas.
What do you love most about what you do?
The freedom it can bring, and it’s actually really therapeutic. I’m a super anxious person so crafting really soothes the soul.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Oh this is a no brainer! My kids. A lot of what I’ve made that’s been successful and people have loved, have been things I’ve actually made for my kids first. So they inspire me for sure, if they love it or ask for something I know it’ll be a great idea.
And my mum!! She’s so stupidly good at being creative and she’s the other half of crafted kisses, she’s mega inspiring.
How do you balance work, being a mum and creative/side project work?
I’m actually still trying to figure this one out. Answers on a postcard Please!!
Seriously though, the kids are at really great ages now so that’s getting a bit easier and work is great with set days, so really the obvious is cramming what I can in on my days off. I spend way too much time coming up with ideas though and nowhere near enough time on actually creating.
How do you switch off and re-charge?
I don’t think I ever really switch off, that’s something else I need to figure out. But I do love a good curl up on the couch and I’ve always been a firm believer of keeping a Sunday as chill as possible while preparing for the new week. We love little walks as a family, so most Sunday’s we find time to get out for some fresh air, to help blow those cobwebs away. A Sunday well spent brings a week of content after all!
What advice would you give to anyone starting out?
Make the time to plan and don’t forget to make the time to execute as well. Nothing will happen over night and be kind to yourself, allow for mistakes we’re only human, and always learning.
What has been the best advice someone has given to you?
It’s been more encouragement than advice, but I suppose they cross over don’t they. I’ve got the best people around me who honestly always acknowledge my achievements and support my ideas. So the constant encouragement to do more are appreciated.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself?
Haha hmm… now if you asked Brad this question we’d be here a while and they’d all be very silly. Fun fact!! Gosh this is hard. Oh ok… I drove to Scotland from Liverpool in my first 3 months of passing my test! It’s worth mentioning it took me 4 goes to actually pass my test as well!
What does the word creativity mean to you?
It’s a way of exploring, it’s enhancing the mundane, it’s therapy. It’s a side of your personality that sometimes words can’t express.
What is your why? Why you do what you do?
My why, is my kids! My husband and a lifestyle I aspire to. I can’t wait for all the roads crafted kisses will take me down.
Well thank you so much for your lovely and inspiring answers! I wish you all the luck in the world with Crafted kisses and will as always be cheering you on! Which leads me nicely to how you can help support and cheer on fellow makers!
